  • Know before you reserve

    Smoking

Smoking and vaping are strictly prohibited anywhere on the hotel property or in the boat. If you smoke on the property, a minimum charge of US $250 will apply. Smoking in your room will result in a US $500 charge to cover deep cleaning and bedding replacement. Charges will be applied to

    Pets

Pets are not allowed on the island at any time. If you're traveling with a service animal, official paperwork must be submitted when making your reservation.

    Children

We welcome children aged 12 and older. If you're traveling with children under 12, the entire island (5 rooms) must be reserved.

    Room Comfort

Each room is equipped with a ceiling fan, but there is no air conditioning, as we are an eco-lodge powered by solar energy. Multiple screened windows allow for a breeze, but we recommend keeping doors closed at night to keep bugs out.

    Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi is available to all guests.

    Massage

We offer a variety of massage options that can be enjoyed on your deck or in our massage ranchito. Check out our menu here.

    Tours

Interested in booking a tour during your stay? Find options here.

    Electricity

Our voltage (110V) and plug types are the same as those in the US, Canada, and most of Latin America. Guests from other countries should check if a converter is necessary.

Please leave hair dryers, curling irons, and straighteners at home, as our solar-powered eco-lodge may not be able to support these high-heat appliances.

    Food & Beverages

    • Bar: Our full bar offers cocktails, wine, beer, smoothies, and non-alcoholic drinks, all served by our full-time bartender.
    • Corkage Fee: If you bring your own bottle (BYOB), we charge a corkage fee of US $10 for wine and US $1 for beer. Please note, we cannot store guests' food or drinks in our refrigerator.
    • Restaurant: We have a full-time kitchen team who can accommodate most dietary restrictions or preferences. Please let us know in advance if you have any requests. Most of our menu items are either vegetarian or vegan and available throughout the day. We also offer dishes featuring chicken, fish and pork.
    • Visiting for Dinner: Can't staying overnight? You can still enjoy dinner at Isleta El Espino! Learn more here.

    Water

We provide filtered water for all guests. Please bring a refillable water bottle to use during your travels.

Filtered water is available in your room, and you can refill it anytime at the bar.

The water in the sink and showers is also filtered, but we don’t recommend drinking it directly from the tap as we do not test it daily.

All water used in the kitchen is carefully filtered to ensure your food is safe.

    Insects

As we are located on a tropical island, you’ll encounter various insects. We work to control them, but nature can be unpredictable. Bring bug spray if needed, and let us know if there’s an issue – we’ll do our best to address it.

    Language

Many of our staff members speak English. If you'd like to practice your Spanish, the staff is always happy to help. An English-speaking staff member is always available, either in person or via phone.

    Tipping

In Nicaragua, it’s customary to tip 10% on food and drinks for good service. At Isleta El Espino, tips are shared among all staff, including those behind the scenes, to ensure everyone who contributed to your stay is recognized.

You don't need to tip after every meal. A 10% propina (tip) will be added to food and beverage purchases upon check out. Please let us know if you prefer a different amount.

If you’d like to tip your masseuse, driver, or tour guide, please do so directly as they are third-party service providers and not employees of El Espino.

    Activities

Many guests come to Isleta El Espino for a peaceful, relaxing experience, but there’s plenty to keep you busy if you’re looking for activities. Check out our current offerings here. You can book before you arrive or after you check-in. We also offer complimentary kayaks for guests to enjoy.

  • Pre-arrival

    Money

Both US Dollars (USD) and Nicaraguan Córdobas (NIO) are widely accepted at most businesses, along with credit cards (though some small shops and restaurants may only accept cash). If you pay in USD, expect to receive change in Córdobas at the current exchange rate.

Be sure your USD bills are clean and free from marks, tears, or folds. Nicaraguan businesses are particular about the condition of the bills they accept, and they often prefer newer notes.

ATMs are available at several banks in Granada. However, we recommend carrying enough cash to be comfortable in case you can't find an ATM.

Exchanging currency is easy with Granada’s money changers, and your hotel can help arrange this if needed.

    Entering Nicaragua

Before traveling, check the entry requirements for Nicaragua based on your country of origin and any countries you will transit through. Do you need a visa or proof of vaccinations? Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your date of departure, or you may be denied entry.

Upon arrival, there is a US $10 tourist fee, payable at Passport Control. You’ll receive a stamped paper that should remain in your passport until you leave the country.

    Packing Recommendations

Pack light, keep it simple, and focus on staying cool. For more packing tips, visit: Packing Guide.

    Solo Travelers

Nicaragua is generally safe for solo travelers, with plenty of opportunities to meet other travelers, especially at Isleta El Espino. While the island is small, like-minded guests often stay at the same time, making it easy to strike up a conversation.

Our friendly staff will ensure you feel like part of the island family and that you're well taken care of during your stay.
